This style looks like something you'd get more general use out of. I know I don't want to tackle Mt. Diablo on the weekends or Mt. Tam during my lunch.

I got the woman's Marin mountain bike from REI last year. I've only ridden it once after testing it, but do know it is the first bike that has ever truly fit me. You can put slicks on mountain bikes to make them easier to street ride, too.

When I was last bike-shopping, I was a bit daunted by the prices at REI and did a bit more comparison shopping. I ended up getting my current bike at Missing Link, which had a much better selection in the "commute & weekend recreation" price range. A lot depends on whether you're planning to use it just for triathlons (in which case the road-race style is definitely the way to go) or might end up wanting something suiting to a broader range of uses. I do just enough trail riding on occasion that I wanted some of those features (like front shocks and wider-than-skinny tires), and I've always hated dropped handlebars even when I'm working on speed. I'd never win any races with it, but I also don't feel like I'm hitching a thoroughbred to a plow when I bike-commute.

Camille, is a custom Giant body with all teh high-end bits and parts, (shimano etc). She is f***ing AWESOME! I got her at Sun bikeshop and they worked with me closely on fit and tweaking. She is about 19 pounds.
Mike at Sun bike shop is a gear head and TOTALLY into the bike part, not the sales part, which is awesome.
My mountain bike is a Specialized, about 8 years old and heavy as all get out. If it gets stolen, I would not cry, because then I could buy something better.
Ds brother has a triathelon bike thats about 14 pounds.
I almost wet my pants when I lifted it.
God. Heaven.
D swears by Bianchi for road bikes, but everything totally depends on the price range you are looking at.
