Tapping into everyone ELSE's creative genius

I need a "cabin boy" outfit for a Saturday night tavern event having to do with pirates... suggestions?

What does a cabin boy wear?

Hair/hat suggestions?

And it's Wednesday - we leave Friday. I have tonight and tomorrow night to "make some magic".

Forecast: no sleep.

Raggedy, loose pants, mid-shin length, torn tunic, messily tucked into the pants. Hair pulled back into either a low french braid or pony tail.

I can totally see you in this outfit in my head.

heh, stella_nordica has the costumer's answer; I just had the idea in my head. I don't know the right technical terms...

OK, I've done some research on 16th c sailors ... a jerkin might indicate a bit more wealth than the average cabin boy would have, as would footwear. Cabin boys were near the bottom of the pecking order. Actually, they grew into the bottom rung ... the little boys were looked after a bit by the older guys (once again, cute being a common survival tactic for baby mamals), but once they got to the snot nosed young teen stage, they were treated as short tempered old guys would want to treat snot nosed teens.

good info. I did some poking around at lunch. Looks like they were ragged-muffins wearing everyone else's cast offs. I think the tavern gathering is focus'd on 17th c, but as a cabin boy it looks like I don't need a coat or vest. Just pants, shirt, maybe something covering my hair, maybe a cloth belt.

tho.. I will be in a public establishment so I can't go barefoot. But I have some sandals that lace up.. they might be least offensive footwear I have. I doubt anyone else will notice.

And you have to realize... I'm probably the ONLY one who will put much effort beyond visiting a Halloween costume store. But I'm going to bang out a man's shirt out of 100% linen tonight. No one will care but me, but I'm my own biggest critic. Tomorrow night I'll do the finish work and make a pair of long, loose pants. Will i have the guts to fray the ends? or stain them? oh gawd.. the OCD will HATE me for staining the pants. I won't be able to "stain" the linen shirt .... I would cry... o man.. I suck at this "costume" thing... *sob* ... I may need to rethink the linen - if I'm going to rub gravy and dirt into it, maybe it needs to be muslin... (banging head on table)...

Did you ever Bluebeard? The cabin boy was a buxom blonde named Mr. Prostitute.

Bad me. Hubband corrected me: the movie was Yellowbeard, not Bluebeard. Sigh.

Oh, and his response to "what does a cabin boy wear?":
Usually the Captain.

Hear, hear... I was going to recommend wearing a chastity belt!

But D didn't specify whether she is a cabin boy in the royal navy or just any old pirate ship ... you could always don the little midshipman uniforms, like in Master and Commander? Or just the splinters and wrecked navies?

Oh now I am sad thinking of Billy Budd!

stella nordica's list plus a sash for the belt.

I've got plenty of piratey stuff from past Halloween parties. You're welcome to any of it!

You have a fluffy white shirt? I may need a fluffy white shirt for the Sunday morning pirate thing where I'm NOT a cabin boy.

I have a fluffy gauzy black shirt that is totally pirate... I can drop off at your house...

You will most likely be the only one dressed up in Pirates garb but I'm willing to gander as well as others!
