"One must walk before one can run"
Did you send me an e-mail since Friday afternoon? I'm just getting to it today.
I bit it on the ski slopes on Sunday. It was a spectacular wipe out. Yay!?!
I was less than half-way down a long back-side run (i.e. you can't get to the Lodge or parking lot from there) so I had to finish my run, ride the lift up to the top and ski down the front to get out of there. I almost talked myself out of quitting, but about halfway down the front-side run it hit me that I didn't have much control on my right leg and couldn't use it to turn. Plus, the pain was cranking up, so prudence won.
To add a level of challenge to getting back to my car, I'd skiied into the ski-resort area and my gear (shoes) were in my car, not at the Lodge. So my options were to ski to the lodge and clump up the drive way hill (maybe 1/8 mile or more) in my ski-boots (heavy, uncomfortable, definitely aggravate the injury) or ski to where my car was. However, in order to get to my car with skis I'd normally have to work my way across the valley bowl via lifts and ski runs, finishing on an intermediate run (named "Hogback" if you're familiar with Bear Valley) that starts out narrow with extreme drop-offs to either side (one of them goes down into the parking lot! I had this visual of landing on the hood of an SUV and impaling myself on their up-pointed windshield wipers), from which I could glide to my car.
Or not! I found a 3rd way. I took the lift-run option part way and managed to cover the rest of the valley bowl by poling, side-stepping uphill, hugging the treeline and crossing the merges of several black-diamond runs (I'm so glad it wasn't busy or I'd have been right in the path of fast-moving down-hill skiiers).
I suppose I could have gotten a ride on the ski-gurney being pulled behind a snowmobile. But my pride had taken enough damage and I'd rather slide down Hogback on my butt than get the rescue ride out.
Prognosis:
Bones are fine per X-rays.
Ligaments seem fine.
Some damage to meniscus. No MRI yet.
Just started walking-hobbling yesterday without crutches.
Orthopedist fell out of chair laughing when I mentioned running and biking by Saturday. Also gave me the "are you nuts?" look when I told him I have a tri in 6 weeks. No running or biking for a while. "One must walk before one can run". I think the Tri is out, too.
I have been laided up and off line for days. If you've sent me email or we have plans for this weekend, then you'll probably hear from me today. This just seemed the fastest way to do a shout-out so that whomever has been emailing me doesn't think I'm flaking. (I have hundreds of unread email and messages).
I'm at work today. Being home sick and unable to tackle projects like the yard or garage drive me insane when the pain isn't bugging me. I got so bored I started in on cataloging my library again, got caught up on "NCIS", and started calling my mom (!!!) just to have someone to talk to.
Looks like I was missed at work. Hundreds of email....
