Sleep is for the Weak
Project Status Blog:
The stuff I got done for June Crown:
(aka why I haven’t slept in several weeks)
:
1. The latest Big Scheme and why D’Salie hangs up on me these days:
14 mantles for 14 household members. Front of mantles have embroidered personal badge on left side and machine made moon appliques for household on right. The back has whatever symbols of peerage the individual has earned to date. (6 pelicans, 5 royal peers, 4 laurels, 2 knights – that’s a lot of applique.). Ideally, the wearer can have their fealty lineage represented on the skirt of the right side. F’s was the one I did with his entire chivalry lineage displayed and it looks pretty sharp. Students’ badges can then go on the left skirt underneath the owner’s badge. All materials are wool, silk and linen. One personal badge was not completed in time (No. 9), but I showed it to the recipient and he was very excited and not at all upset that it didn’t get done in time. For me, this project easily represented 300 hours of my time doing embroidery. The presentation was awesome. Everyone seemed thrilled with the gift and quite amazed that we could keep such a secret for such a long time.
And it could not have been done without the help of Fighter-Chick, Ice Skater Lady and the Red Shrew. As of yesterday, D'Salie is talking to me again and at the presentation she was pleasantly plowed and happy to get the hugs. Job well done. Thanks to all who helped.
2. Costumes and costume alterations for kids:
Stinky got a new wool houpelande.
Claw had 2 new smocks and an altered kirtle.
This was needful - they had nothing that fitted.
3. I got a new 15th century Italian wool dress.
This was needful since I was loaning out my current wardrobe to someone else.
4. The pavilion got a floor and an additional room made.
This was wanted (not needful), but I've been wanting it since oct. Crown and felt that sharp sense of accomplishment at getting it done very late Thursday night.
5. The patronage basket for V was prepped and brought.
This was needful and I probably could have passed it off, but was glad I didn't need to.
6. Goodies for the new students were acquired.
This was easy.
7. The baskets for “Doing Evil” were brought. (I forgot the basket contents, but called the Sarcastic Spouse and they picked up some).
This was a no-brainer.
So “hurrah” that I was able to get so much done. By sacrificing sleep I was able to do quite a lot of it. All the pavilion stuff was done Thursday night before going up to the event. Even so, I was still doing handwork on one of the mantles Saturday afternoon. Right now I’m going to spend at least one week not working on a single project for anyone else. Time to unwind and recover my house from massive neglect. Maybe I'll garden this weekend.

In some reference that I can no longer find, "Salie" or "Salai" was the nickname that da Vinci earned from his teacher and it supposedly meant "little devil" because he was so mischieveious.
Actually, you know D'Salie. She's one of my main co-conspirators, but I don't want to "out" her here.
Some of us came up with these alternate Italian personas for when we are up to "no-good" or for when we feel like playing with an actual persona in the SCA. Afterall it seems pretty silly to be gallivanting around with a Welsh, Irish or Norman name when we mostly wear Italian clothing. I've been trying to research an actual 15th century Italian background to go with the clothing and the name. It's lead to some really interesting reading on 15th century Florentine culture, literature and politics. Unfortunately, I've been severely distracted by my more recent love of all things Flemish.
More info than you probably want to know, ...

It must mean something similar, but it's not "little devil" (diavoletto, in case you were wondering). salare means "salt" (closest to salai), and I couldn't find salie or anything close to it. Now mind you, this is all modern Italian... that's as far as my resources stretch.
