Dear friends who want to be Fire Fly Fans,

NO, I will not loan out my DVDs of season 1. You may come over and watch at our place or get your own – mine (technically, the spouses) are too valuable and dearly loved to risk losing and thus causing (1) the dismemberment of a friendship and (2) a huge hole in our regular viewing library. I’ve already said “no” to people I’ve been friends with for over 10 years and I found it wasn’t hard to do.

However, SciFi is going to start airing season 1 on July 22, so you can watch it on TV, Tivo it, or record it via conventional VHS or whatever. Use the technology you have and hopefully the SciFi channel will actually air them in order (unlike those nimrods at Fox).

Dear Collegium Fans –

Site plans continue to fall like a failed souffle.

I called my latest school principal yesterday. It was his first day on the job at a new school and the only day he’d be there before school starts on August 15. He was really friendly and welcoming, so I hopped in my car and headed up there so we could meet in person. I got as far as Dixon when he called me back to decline us.

It turns out that the date is open, but for most of October the campus is going to be taken over by rookie fire fighters and police officers doing training … i.e. crawling with buff young men who are running, leaping, climbing, sweating … and that’s bad because …. ? Oh- right! Gotta focus here; we’re supposed to be having an SCA event. We definitely can’t be having our activity amidst their equipment and their activity. And they won't be cleaning up their activity for us.

DRAT!!!!

So I’ve put out a call to Nikki, who’s husband chats with Malcolm, who (I think) teaches at a school that used to host this event in Dixon.

And I put out a call to Countess KickAss since she and one of her friends mentioned a site in the Modesto area for Fall 2006.

And if all else fails, we will have the event, it just won’t be in Cyangua. It bums me out, but I can only do what I can do. I’ve already burned 2 vacation days running around Sacramento visiting sites and the rest are already allocated to taking the family on vacation this winter. So there it is.

Why Monday Further Bloweth

But – that was not the end of yesterday’s “wonderful” adventure. After I got the call from Mr. Friendly Principal, I turned around to go back to Berkeley so I could do my day job. I’d arranged to be a little late with my boss and it looked like I’d be getting in by 10 am, which wasn't bad. If only! I did not have my radio on and got almost as far as Fairfield when I saw the sign that said “Prepare to Stop”. I got trapped on the wrong side of yesterday’s fatal accident on Hwy 80. It took me from 9:30 until 12 to get past it. That’s less than 10 freeway miles, but I called my co-workers and had them Yahoo-map the area and give me the off-freeway directions. Apparently I choose wisely because it took others even longer to navigate the freeway.

The accident scene was shocking. I generally try to avoid being a rubber-necker because it’s dangerous when drivers are distracted by the scenery – just what you don’t need is a second accident at the scene of the first accident. Plus, in my years of commuting, I’ve seen enough accidents that I feel no need to look. But yesterday I had plenty of time to creep up on the accident scene and observe the wreckage. Those cars were crushed. I couldn’t even tell which end was front and which was the back of one vehicle. And all because someone pulled out in front of a big truck and the truck swerved, hitting 6 other cars. It certainly put my Collegium stress in perspective.

All of this being late to work and Collegium-fu triggered a complete stress overdrive last night and the predictable sewing binge.

The seeds of my sewing project were planted when I called D’Salai from my cell phone while as I was making my way through the back roads of Fairfield and trying desperately to get to work before 1pm. I was relating all my bad Monday Foo and …

She says it’s forecast to be over 100 degrees in Gilroy this weekend. I’m suddenly afraid of wilting at A&S while at Coyote Lake. For this weekend, I was making a 1460 ensemble with a linen dress and heavy velvet overdress. While talking to D’Salai the heavy overdress (which is only cut out) has been put on the mental back burner because there’s no way I’m wearing heavy velvet at this event. Then I had a vision about what I could wear. Thus, last night I started a new project – young men’s style of clothing from 1460 Florence - for myself. Yup, I’ve decided to cross-dress at A&S.

My initial vision was to wear the doublet unbuttoned, but then I was digging through pictures and I’ve decided to have it lace up the front instead. I can always wear it partly unlaced for the sake of comfort. I got rolling after the kids were put to bed, which was around 8:30 pm. By 10 pm I had the shirt done with all the edges finished. By 12:30 I had the doublet constructed, lacing holes done and sleeves cut out. I fell asleep tacking down the facing. I need to finish tacking some of the facing, assemble the sleeves, attach the sleeves and hem it. There may be some final fitting and I’m going to use Yseult’s gambeseon advice with the fit through the hips, which is that tighter is better with regard to points. Then I need to mark where the hose are going to tie those in and make those holes.

The doublet is linen, lined with linen and interfaced with wool – yeah, I know. How is that cooler than the dress? Well, I make clothes, not costumes and no matter how many short cuts I intend to take, when it comes time to cut out the fabric, something inside me won’t let me deliberately ignore how it’s supposed to be done. All my sources say that the men’s garment is supposed to be padded and quilted. I didn’t actually quilt the fabric, but it’s certainly got body and I can go back later and do some quilting on the finished garment. So there it is. It’s a deep burgundy-plum linen on the outside with screaming red linen lining. I should finish it tonight.

I’ve never made full hose before, which I’m tackling tonight after the kiddos go to bed. I’m not really sure what I should be making them out of (linen? wool?) and I can’t buy anything new for this. Must not spend money. (fortunately, I even had thread to match the linen, which was not expected.) I'm not actually sure I have anything appropriate stashed in the garage. I may actually take a short cut here in the spirit of figuring it all out and use some fire-engine red knit I already own. That would kind of suck. Wait – I have some lavender linen that might work …. Hmmm, I wonder if I have enough of it … It would clash splendidly. I could always be scandalous and roll the hose down ... We shall see - I'm such a Victorian, the idea of not wearing the hose pulled up makes me squeamish. After the hose are constructed, it’s time to make braies. Whoop! I should be able to do 90% of that stuff tonight.

Tomorrow I plan on making a hat and finish up loose ends. And then on Thursday I will make Clara de Agua for my camp mates and return to my regularly scheduled 1460s dress. I don’t think I’ll get the new linen chemise made, though. Ah, well. There’s only so much I can do when I’ve already cashed in my sleep chips.

Back to the day job …

Did you find the documentation? I totally forgot you asked for it. Email me at home if you still need it and I'll send you the file. :)

Stamina? Hmm. I fell asleep around 1am doing hand work while watching Angel DVDs. I so badly wanted to stay awake, but my body shut down. I think I crawled upstairs around 3:30 and didn't bother to take my contacts out. I have icky eyes today. Tonight I'll pull the contacts out as soon as I get home. But I'm rolling onwards tonight.

I'm so jazzed by this project. D'Salai was saying maybe she needed to go to the event if only to see what the heck I've made. hahahahaha! D'Salai was further saying on the phone last night that V's husband better be careful or I'll "out testosterone" him in camp. In the background her spouse was saying V's husband has already lost. heeheeheeheeeee! Hey - what's he implying??

Anyway, I'm definitely in my groove.

So you lasted 'til 30 minutes before I get up for work. *That's* why I don't do anything at night!!! I did manage to mark the hem for two pairs of work pants and my Saturday morning cookwear... but was still dead to the world by 9:00.
