These interesting times..
Jul. 13th, 2010 11:49 amMedical: The big toe is still in not-good shape, but looks like it's healing. My appointment with the podiatrist is 7/20, but the pain overcame me on 7/3 after we got home from some festivities where all I did was lay around for a few hours and watch fireworks. So I did home-surgery on the nail that night. I got a variety of nail cutting devices, ibuprofen, ran a scalding hot tub of water, got a good David Weber book (Path of Fury) and an epic rum and coke (8oz run, 8 oz coke). I read and drank for about 30 minutes, double dosed my pain killers, and then started in on cutting out a slice of toe nail. When it hurt so bad that I broke out in a sweat, I stuck my foot in the bath, which set my whole foot on fire and drowned out the acute pain in my toe. I thought the alcohol would help with pain (they do that in old westerns!) but I think it just helped cement my resolve; if I'd been sober I might have come to my senses and gone to ER. Anyway, home toe surgery done. I think it's better.
homeWe cleaned out the garage last weekend. 6 hours on Sunday from 10 am to 4pm in the heat of the day. Now we can walk from the door to the back of the garage. There's more to do, but we all tapped out feeling pretty pleased.
I promised someone a jog stroller and now I can't remember who. Anyone? If no takers by tomorrow, I'm giving it to Annie, my Cleaning Fairy.
I dug into my shed last week. It was sad. When did I trash it? I spent a hug portion of my day off cleaning it up so I could get to my sewing machine.
However, I'm there now. I plan to cut and sew tonight. I'm SOOO excited. (I'm SEW excited!)
Book I just finished the 3rd Stieg Larson book, the Girl who kicked the hornets nest. I enjoyed the entire series a lot. Very sharp, smart, well paced, and i like the fact that it's in a different country. Nice to know that people are people regardless of where they live.
FitnessI missed my triathlon last Saturday. (See comment on toe). I haven't run in at least 3 weeks, maybe longer. However, instead of throwing in the towel, I've switched over to "weight lifting with intent" and I'm doing my cardio on the elliptical, which doesn't agggravate the toe. I surprised myself last week; I did the squat machine and worked up from 2 45# plates to 4 45# plates to 6 45# plates and topped it off with a couple of 10# plates, doing a set of 20 reps for the first 3 sets. Who knew my glutes were so useful? On Friday and Saturday I burned 1000 calories on the elliptical and on Sunday I hit 1400. Yay. I am pleased that my toe is not keeping me inactive.
TechI think I need to break down and get a day planner. I used to keep one, but I've been flying by the seat of my pants for too long. I don't have a lot of time to make fresh lists. I have a Franklin Planner that I liked, but I want to try and go "small" which means tech. Any recommendations? The caviat is that I have a Verizon phone, so the iPhone is out (even tho I LUST it).
Crazy I was in a car accident yesterday. I rear-ended someone. Ironically, up until that moment, I hadn't been tailgating in the stop-n-go traffic and I felt no urgency because I was running on time. We started to move again, I took my eyes off the car ahead of me to glance in my rear view mirror and when I glanced back the car ahead had stopped. I hit the brakes and slid into him going less than 20 mph. ugh. We pulled over and exchanged info.
I couldn't find my insurance card, so I called my insurance company to get my policy number. After being rerouted a few times, the new bored voice asked me for my policy number before she could help me... ??... to which I said, "If I knew my policy number I wouldn't have called."
My car is drivable, although the front of the hood and the grill (built into the hood) has been damaged. The other driver's car looks unhurt; we think my nose went under his bumper to account for my damage and his lack of damage. Everyone said they were okay. I think I may have ubber-clenched my jaw at some point because it hurts, but that's just stress and reaction. I felt weird and freaked out; I called F before I started driving again. I needed that contact with my other half. I decided that I needed to go through the rest of the plans for the day as though nothing unusual had happened.
AS I pulled back onto the freeway, I realize I hadn't gotten the other guys plate number. sigh. total freak out fall out.
I got the kids to swim lessons. Usually Rat and/or Stacey are at swim and it was such a relief to have immediate access to one of my best friends and lean my head on a sympathetic shoulder. Then we talked about life, the universe and the nonsensical things in it. Thank god. Being able to come down from my freak out and being outside with one a trusted friend and just talking about stuff that isn't earth shattering was probably the best therapy. I was thinking a rum/coke in the hot tub later would also be nice, but I got home and fell straight to sleep on the sofa. I woke up to relocate to bed after 10pm. I feel amazingly refreshed today (all that sleeping?).
