So much pressure. Read more... )

On the other hand, the kids continue to crack me up and make me proud. The only pressure there is the pressure I put on myself.

Upon arriving at Erinwood, I inform them we will make a round of "hello's" before we set up camp.

Miss E, "But I'm shy. Do I have to talk to everyone?"
Super N, "E, you just need to face your fears."

It's so hard to keep the laughter on the inside when I hear the wisdom they share back and forth.

We watched some friend's kids on Friday and my kids were great hosts. Miss E was enchanted with the 2 yr old and they played for hours. (She informed me she wants a baby sister. har har har... so easy to want but very hard to live with).

We went to a BBQ on Saturday and they wow-ed the non-parents in the crowd by heeding me when I said "no" to more cookies. And they played really great with the host's kids, too. Super N once again organizing games all the kids could play. It's so interesting to watch him develop self-confidence.

Last week was wretched. I'm so happy to back in my normal chaos zone. I'm still not making "plans", but at least I don't have to hate being at work, too.

The last week's top "bad" unless misery loves company, cut to protect everyone from suckiness )

My happy:

1. Last week is over. RELIEF!

2. At lunch on Friday, my (awesome) team had a potluck. Everyone worked their butts off all week, so the food was all "bought" because no one had time/energy to make a dish, but it was spiritually renewing to sit and eat as a group and to "meet" with each other outside the clean rooms.

3. Dinner at a friends on Friday. It was a social "engagement" that more or less happened as planned. (Hubby ended up cancelling: he had to work late, so I missed him being there. So that part of the plan didn't happen).

4. My mom did not come over this weekend. I'm pretty sure her enthusiasm for "helping" me and adding to my "to do" list would have driven me off the edge. We had a wonderful hour-long chat on Saturday instead. I'm up to date on her senior center classes, her latest Goodwill treasure hunting successes, what all her friends and their kids are doing, that my sister's overseas jaunt will be extended (boo!) and the doings of her evil sister-in-law.

5. I ran on Sunday and pushed my pace. It was good.

6. I swam laps Monday morning. It was good. I felt comfortable in the water even if I'm not fast.

7. I got a random call on my cell from a sister and we chatted for an hour last night as we commuted home. It was good.

8. We had to repeat some airflow work yesterday. Apparently the camera operator (me) managed to hit the buttons at the wrong time on Tuesday. The validation guys and my office neighbor just had to subject me to the video I did take: me setting up the camera while singing Van Halen songs to myself. There was extreme laughter as the camera bumps along and you can hear me singing. No, I'm not good. AND, even best of all, it's officially part of our raw documenation, so it will be preserved forevah and evah!

9. I made mint chocolate ice cream last night. It will get frozen tonight. But I "finger licked" the pot after I put the mix in the fridge to cool over night. YUMMM! OMG! And it's my own recipe! I love making treats.

10. I got on the scale this morning. I know I made bad choices last week, I didn't work out, I binged on cookies and rum one night, and probably had too much wine with dinner Friday night. I didn't weigh in last week, but I've been here before and I could tell I was 5-6 lbs above my range by Saturday. Today I'm just 1/2 lb above my "normal" range. Weird, but 'yay'.

11. I have my own wet suit.

12. I have a one way ticket to Paris. (and a one way ticket from Milan to SFO). But I got devilish delight in telling the bosses last week that I had a one-way ticket to Paris.

drum rollAnd last night's Awesomeness:

N, with glee, "Wow! Mommy, I'm reading and I don't have to read and I don't want to read."

Me, "If you don't want to read, then why are you reading?"

N, "Well, I didn't want to read, but then I started reading and now I want to read. But I didn't have to and now I want to because I want to finish the story."

Me: pride, relief, joy, pride...

My triathlon demo did not go well.

1. I freaked in the pool. No idea why, I just did. Solution: more pool time starting this Friday.

2. The computer on my bike did not choose to work, so I had no way of clocking my mileage. About an hour into it, I decided to just accept that it is what it is. I stretched the bike ride into 2 hrs because I was also feeling creaky and lumpy. I went up Mitchell Canyon Rd and then part way out Marsh Creek. I skipped the run. Solution: more bike time for lumpiness. The comp appears to be broken because I eventually twiddled it into reading my speed, but the odometer refused to cooperate. Not sure I want to pay for a new computer right now.

post-tri Lunch: great! Sushi and Miles Vorkosigan.

The weekend went downhill from there; massively and rapidly. Even thinking about it makes me crabby. Overall, it was a waste of a good weekend and I wish I had a do-over. In fact, I was positively cheerful when I came to work because I knew that being here would be better than my weekend. So in the spirit of silver linings, pots of gold and half-full cups, I'm leaving work at 4:30 today so I can ride my bike for an hour before picking up the kids. And I'll probably pick them up via bike and have them walk home. WHich will be massively fun and we can enjoy the weather. Can't wait for the farmer's market.

Sleepless

My motivating words for today:

I hope everyone's toffee sets! Don't crack yer windshield getting the ice off!

heheheheh! I've been up all night and now I'm at work. I just couldn't wind down and go to sleep. Gack!

Last night I got off work at 4:45, which shaved half an hour off my commute time. (Dang! note to self - start going to bed earlier so we can repeat this slick trick). I picked up kids and grocery shopped. I made dinner. Then I cooked some more for the heck of it ... well, not really. I cooked for the rest of the lunches for this week, which are neatly stacked in plastic ziplock containers in the frig. I burned a batch of toffee. (drat! - that was supposed to be gifties for household). I put the kids to bed, which took almost an hour due to fussing, teeth brushing, and cuddling. I got lured onto the computer by the evil spouse, which normally doesn't keep me awake on its own - I'm very capable of falling asleep at the keyboard while battling bad guys. (heh!) But I didn't fall asleep. I uploaded pictures to Costco photo for Nana for her Christmas cards. I decided to forage ahead with the second batch of toffee (that was 2:30 am). I'm not sure I liked the consistency, but it needs to finish hardening. I finally finished at 3:30 am with toffee and some kitchen-tidying. I tried to lay down and my blood was pumping so fast, I felt like I was vibrating. So I laid there vibrating until 4:15 am, staring at the ceiling and calculating what time I'd get off work if I just got up and drove in.

One hot shower later, here I am. I sort of energy-crashed while I was driving to work, which was hairy. And I seem to be more clumsey than usual. I forsee a nap at lunch time. But right now I'm on my third or fourth wind and ready to dig into my pile of work.

The silver lining? I got to turn on the heat in our trailer before someone else decided to blast the AC(brrrr!). There was light traffic all the way in (although it seems to be heavier at this time than last spring ... memory failure or recovering economy? hmmm). I've got a head start on all sorts of urgent tasks. I'd be off work at 2:30 pm if I didn't have meetings until 4:30, so I'm buggin' out early on Friday. do-dah, do-dah.

Yay! Woot! Happy Wednesday.

I'm doing "real" engineering. That must be why I'm wet and cold. I've been testing emergency safety showers and eyewashes. The "shower curtain" gizmo on the hoop&stick was only mostly helpful. I had to juggle that and a stop watch at the same time while leaning back to keep an eye on the water level in the 50 gallon tank because it would fill much faster than the desired 20 gpm. On the third shower, the gizmo slipped and a jet of water shot 10 feet to land directly on my wool coat, the paper I was recording results on and my fanny pack. What are the odds?

sigh.

The gizmo slipped the rest of the way and I got nuked. I think the hard-hat deflected a lot of the water, but I'm a cold, shivering mess.

Soup and warm jammies sound really good right now.
