Today (Saturday) was Miss E's official B-day. She is officially 7.

Protect me from confident little girls. Today she got dressed in an outfit one of the (stylish) aunts gave her and she looks a lot older. She also carries herself older. Even her whining seems teen-ish to me. sigh. I'm not ready for her to grow up.

Anyway, I worked from 7pm last night to 2:30am this morning and when I stumbled into the bedroom around 3:30am, Mr Surgery was needing an ice pack, then he needed snuggles, then he was jerking awake every 30 minutes or so due to shooting pain (which coincidentally wakes me up when he suddenly yelpls in pain), and at 9am he nudged me because CVS Pharamacy was open and he needed stuff. I dragged myself to the pharamacy, pleased that I remembered to pull on shorts and kind of disappointed that I didn't notice how short they were until I sat down on the cold seat of the Volvo (quite short! bending over makes them indecent. Daisy Duke, look out!). I didn't brush my hair or even cover up crazy sticky-up bangs with a hat, so between my quasi-trashy appearance and the collection of stuff I was getting such as painkillers, ace bandages, portable shower seat, I'm sure I gave the clerk something to speculate about on my way out of the store. I got home, took care of Mr Surgery, and then crawled into bed in Super N's room and closed the door on the world. I didn't emerge until after noon. Ahhh... sweet rest.

Miss E's actual B-day was expected to be more of a "shelter in place" kind of day. When I got up the kids were watching cartoons, which had been going on since 7am. So for my entertainment, I made all the TVs turn off. They whined, so I passed out books and made them read. After reading Super N pulled out a science kit and built a dinosuar and as part of that activity I made each of them write out 5 things they learned from examining the skeleton. This turned out to be a very good exercise; Super N plays the minimum effort rule such as "the head is different than I expected", so I cross-examined him, asking "how"? He groaned and complained a lot, but got through it. At that point Super N disappeared from my radar and I believe it was done deliberately because I had been cleaning out the "home work table" which had accumulated a lot of stuff, was finding some unfinished homework of Miss E's from last year and was gleefully making her do it. I think Super N feared that loittering in my sight would result in doing more homework. That deduction was quite astute of him. Once Miss E was done with old homework, I handed her flash cards.

P.S. Homework table is cleaned out. It had accumulated a lot of unrelated stuff. I piled all that on the floor and they have until bedtime on Sunday to clean it up, afterwhich I'm throwing it all away. More groans.

I acquired an "over the door" basketball hoop and mini-basket ball today. The kids love it. Miss E complains that Super N is bigger and that it's not fair. I have no mercy for her; her BB team is made up of 2nd-4th graders and will have to play other 4th graders, so I told her that practicing with her brother would help her be better on her team. Suck it up or sit on the sides, but Mommy doesn't want to hear it. I'm not a fan of artificially leveling every single playing field out there; life isn't fair and learning to cope with that is an important life skill. And since almost everything in our house is leveled to be fair, I don't think she will suffer severe lasting emotional damage. Later I heard a squeal of victory when she snatched the ball and made a shot. So there you go.

Play hard, Little Girl. No one is going to hand you victory.

Super N helped cook dinner. I had him read the directions on the rice packet and although I helped him interpret and I handled the raw meat, he made Spanish Rice, heated oil, chopped onions, sauted onions, peeled/smashed garlic, etc. It was a lot of fun. While we filled the house with smells of cooking onion and garlic, Miss E frosted and decorated cup-cakes to her hearts content. It was a pretty happy time for all of us.

To round it all out, we were having a group snuggle in our bed and I snuck out, planted a candle in one cup cake and light it, and then carried it and a few others upstairs, where we all sang the traditional happy birthday song to Miss E and she got to blow out a candle.

And now... I'm off to the gym. My glutes and quads are in severe pain. Yesterdays "Booty Work out" was extreme. (Below for the curious). I've been achey-breaky all day, so a 30 minute jog to work out the kinks** followed by upper body/arms weights and abs. woot woot. (I had 3 cupcakes; they were small and not much frosting, but still... I need to burn those sugars off)

My Booty Buster Work Out:

I did all of these at my max effort. I even collapsed to one knee at the end of the last set of lunges because I went so deep that I was too fatigued to stand up. That's how I know I wasn't sand-bagging myself. This was about Busting It Out and making gains.

Super Set a) and b).
a)Straight Leg Dead Lifts, 45# bar, 4 sets of 20 reps
b)Hip Thrust with 25# plate, 4 sets of 20 thrusts, on 20th rep do 20 pulses/squeezes while at the top (20+20P)
c)Cable Kick Back, 3 sets: 40#-20 reps; 50#-15 reps; 60#-15 reps
d)45 deg Squat Machine, 2x45#plate, 20 reps; 4X45# plates: 10 reps;4X45# plates: 15 reps
e)2-Step Lunge with 10# dumbell in each hand: Step forward into a lunge twice - 1 time each leg (travelling forward), then step back 2x in lunge to end up in starting position. 3 sets of 10 (2Step-5x3)

** Edit: 30 minute jog didn't help. In fact, jogging was only a little uncomfortable. Walking on the treadmill, however, really really hurt. I am self medicating with a stint in the hot tub, flavored water (<-- a spiritual heal), more stretching and more walking.
