Yes, the negative role models have been rife in the past. Fortunately, I've had some very good role models, too. I was full of insecurity over this parenting thing when we first started down this path. However, I took a parenting class 2 years ago and it was very reaffirming that we're on the right track. It's so cool to hear an "expert" tell me that I need to be doing the things I'm already doing. As a reality check to "experts", it helps that most people who aren't out-right allergic to kids actually like ours.
I try to incorporate the kids in whatever I'm doing because during the week I only get a few hours a day with them. I like to make that time count so it's rare that I actually work on a project while they are awake; unless they are absorbed in an art project, my absorbtion takes too much attention away from them. It doesn't mean it's all play-doh and TV - they help me make dinner, do laundry, load/unload the dishwasher, etc. Tonight we will play the matching game, which is what I call matching socks in the clean laundry pile. (hahaha!)
The are a part of my life, not apart from my life.
