It was all good. Victory all around.

Personal Victory: I finished in approximately 3 hrs, 20 minutes, which is WAY faster than I was even hoping.

[livejournal.com profile] sirst finished in less than 4 hrs, his personal goal. AND he did it without goggles!!! Yikes! And for someone who's training was sporadic, included no bricks and was interupted with a car-accident.. all I can say is "Hot DAMN!" how can I get me a slice of that cardio base!!!

And for super fun stuff, we kept passing each other on the run laps. We were yelling encouragement across the barrier. That was so awesome. One of my best memories.

And SassyCat, our third member of Forward Momentum, is riding 150 miles this weekend to raise funds for MS. Woot! Woot!

Go Team Forward Momentum.
We's da fun in motion!

Mermaid Time:
The swim, 1500meters (just under a mile) was good. My attitude: just get into the zen of my swim, maintain constant level of effort, and don't worry about proving anything other than being able to finish. Pretty sane for me. It was 2 laps in the kelp - out, back, get out of water, loop around "the rock" on the beach, and back into the water for 2nd lap. Watching the previous waves do this, I was wondering, "why aren't they running up the beach and back out into the surf." Well, cuz it's bizarre to go from swimming, to vertical motion, to slogging across sand, and back into water: walking = not falling over. heh. It was kind of neat to get into the zen of it and while swimming, to admire the different kelps growing. I got tossed about by some choppy water and felt kind of dizzy on my 2nd lap. At first, didn't know what was going on and got freaked that I was getting dizzy while swimming, but once I realized it was the chop and not me, I chilled out. And swimming in the ocean is salty. Yeah, "duh", but the Hawaii Ironman is 4x as long; bleck! I can't imagine swimming for 4x that distance (i.e. 4x as long) while keeping the salt out of my mouth. Anyway, stray ironman thoughts aside, I was surprised that I was in the middle of my wave's pack. Go me!

Ride like the wind
Or how about, "Ride into the head wind, Bullseye". The ride was windy and I was dizzy from my swim at the start... oh! I need to check my shoes, I may have lost a screw from my soles. Anyway, it was four laps, 10K each and it took me about 10 minutes to quit weaving and get steady on my wheels.. I was biking like a crazy drunk person from all that dizzy. But it was fun and scenic. It was mostly level, but whereas everyone else in my pack slowed for the weenie hills we had, I mentally cheered: Go Wildcat! Go! I Ownz Da Hills! I shifted gears, upped cadence, and those who passed me right before these (weenie) inclines got to watch me pass them. Yay me!

I was timing my laps since in one of my less-than-genius moments I jostled Sally's odometer sensor out of position and had no idea what my speed was. I think I was on cruise control (or maybe "swim recovery speed") for the first lap, but it was 25 minutes and that was "not good" to math brain (25X4= 1hr, 40 min... boo hoo!). So I kicked it up. I finished the entire bike ride in approximately 90 minutes (like 91-92) with a sprint at the end. I notice I'm a faster rider when I have someone to chase. go me!

Run like you Stole it
That was one of the signs a spectator was holding. LOL.
The run was good. The only pain was the quads, which got pushed in the bike and got no relief in the run. The shins and calf did not bug me. I pushed my pace for short intervals. I finished my run in about an hour, which was what I was hoping I'd do before my injuries cropped up. Yay!

Cheering Section
And we had da awesome cheering section. My number-one fan plus his mom and one of HER evil cohorts, Sue, shouted from the side lines. They watched me get out of the water and then parked at the run side line. To illuminate, Sue and Mom would fit in with the Villa Lunatics. They were 2 of the 5 leaders/trouble makers in the local Lioness Club (service organization; strike any parallels?) before it was hijacked into Lions. Yeah - I went to one Lioness meeting years ago and had a look at what the Villa Lunatics will be like in 15 years: hell on wheels. Look out men, they don't slow down, they only get sassier!@!

Anyway, the whole thing was awesome.

:-D
Race Gossip
Keeping in mind your age is marked on the back of your calf, it was really cool throughout when (a) I passed chicks 15 years or more younger than me and (b) being smoked by the 50+ age groupers. Even the 45+ age groupers were smoking fast... which is so totally awesome. It's something to aspire to. And being passed by some gal ploughing along at an 8 minute mile, realize she started the race 15 minutes AFTER me... or more... woot! That's totally awesome! My personal inspiration.

Also cool.. the elites. Wow. I drool over their equipment.. I'm referring to the bike stuff. Wandering through the transition area, you could see who'd spent $1000 on the wheels on their rides. wow. Not that owning that stuff to shave 2 minutes off my ride would really help me win anything... but I can fantasize. And they are swift, rich fantasies...

I had less than kind thoughts to the bitch that was racked up next to me at the transition zone. Because of how it was set up, I had hardly any room and she wasn't going shift over to let me squeeze Sally in on the rack. Her bike was hanging crooked and I was respectfully waiting for her to notice and shift it over. Instead she said, "That's all the room you get." Which is super stupid when you have to walk away from hundreds of dollars of equipment and trust I'm not going to spike your gatorade, steal your banana, flatten your tires or just steal the front tire off your bike and toss it over the nearby wall into the surf. Bitch. I'm pretty sure I gave her a "look", probably rolled my eyes, and pushed her bike aside so I could hang up Sally. I was laying out my stuff with as little space as possible under her snitty supervision when I think she realized that she'd just set herself up to have her stuff trashed behind her back. LOL. She suddenly got super helpful with pulling her stuff aside. Anyway, I beat her out of the water and was clearly ahead of her the whole time. Take that, bitch. LOL. (No, I didn't touch her stuff. No need to incur bad karma. Beating her was good enough for me).

We stayed at the Gosby House on Lighthouse ave. Totally awesome accomodations. And I must have +6 to my planning stats. I booked our accomodations without knowing where, in Pacific Grove, the race would be. I had no idea of the lay of the land. We were 4 blocks from the race. yeah.. I totally rock. [livejournal.com profile] sirst parked next to us and we walked our gear to the race. And in Santa Cruz we were 1/2 block from the transition. Yeah.. definitely +6 planning bonus. And the B&B... did I say it was awesome? It was.

next up: recover from race and then tackle pushing my mileage up on my tempo runs/rides, and fiddling with the speed training stuff I've gleaned. I'm excited and motivated. I am suspecting the Tri at Pacific Grove is going to happen again next year.

You rock, woman!

I'm really glad you put so much detail into these posts. It gives a good idea of what you really had to do to get through the race.

you're welcome.

I was going to stop these posts, but one friend said she really enjoys them, so for her I keep doing them. I'm glad you also enjoy them.
