The kids were at grandma's this weekend. We had no plans to go anywhere or to capitalize on this; we puttered around the house. (I put in a cameo at cooks collegium).
Saturday night, we had our feet up, watching TV (which I hardly do anymore) and it was weird. We both thought it was weird.
It was too quiet. It was too calm. There was no chaos. There was no sense of frantic activity in the background. There was no "kid schedules" to juggle around. 36 hrs of kid-free time and I spent most of it hyper aware that they were not there because part of my attention is always on them no matter where they are in the house.
While watching TV we both kept commenting that it was weird. Was this what it was like before we had kids? Neither of us were sure; we can't remember. Is this how people without kids live? Their time is their own and not over-scheduled? It was scary. I could feel my batteries recharing to full charge and my impulse to pull out my calendar to start scheduling activities grew very strong... We were just glad to have them back today. The chaos and energy levels are back to "Kid-tastic".

Date: 2008-09-22 03:57 pm (UTC)I have limited free time, so I spend my zone-out time (like when walking from meeting to meeting) scheming how I will use my free time. When I finally get some free time, it never occurs to me to put my feet up because I've got 15 different plans for using it effectively. And I'm so excited about that window of free time, my feet barely hit the ground before I'm off and running.
That's my theory for what makes me tick.

Date: 2008-09-22 02:56 pm (UTC)I'm retired now and the house is always too quiet. I had to get some mutts to distract me so I can get things done.
