Who knows what kind of insane mix-up I can get into in Europe; it's a lot bigger than Japan
On the upside, the signs are written in letters you recognize, which gives somebody with a basic grounding in European languages a better chance of figuring things out. (I've been there - about to miss my train, unable to find a sign with western script, at a tube station in Japan, at rush hour. terrifying!)
