And I can relate to the communication problems in France. When I was there with my Mom and three sisters-in-law (we had a blast :-), when I tried to speak French nobody could understand me, but when my SIL Gwenn would say essentially the same thing (sometimes the exact same thing), they would understand.
One thing we think contributed to it is that I would forget to use definite and indefinite articles (le/la, un/une), and they really seemed to have a hard time recognizing nouns without articles, at least when not pronounced with a good French accent.
