Miss E chatters non-stop, so the volume of funny-cute-unexpectedly philosophical things that come from her is relatively high. But Super N has his own way, too.

Bring It On!

The new swim session started on Monday. The new teacher is more of a coach and Super N is doing laps. At the end of the lesson the Coach informed me that this was the transition to swim team and his goal was to send Super N home each night in a state of total exhaustion. Super N looked over at the coach and said,'

"Well if that's what you want, you're going to have to work a lot harder."

I am both proud of him and worried that he's going to learn a very hard lesson.

Lying in Wait
I chased the kids to bed one night this week. If they dally I will start to count to 3 and once I hit three I will start chasing them and if I catch them out of bed, I tickle them. I started to count and they left popping sounds as they raced to bed.

I dallied before actually going in and giving good night kisses and apparently this encouraged Super N. When I made it into his room, I pulled back his comforter to find that the child-shaped lump underneath was blankets and stuffed animals. My heart skipped a beat, but then I rolled my eyes.

Halfway down the stairs I suddenly asked myself, am I really going to have to search every-closet, curtain and nook in the house? Ugh. It's late. I called out his name and the peal of giggles followed by "yes, mommy?" echoed from the bathroom. He stepped out (later he related this as the moment he "ratted himself out". LOL) and posed on the top of the landing, "Here I am? Were you looking for me?"

Oh... I see. We are Captain Sassy Pants! He tried for looking innocent, but he couldn't keep a straight face.

"I was looking for you. And I see you are out of bed. 3-2-1 I'm gonna get you." He screached and dodged for his room, but I meant to catch him this time and did. I pinned him to the carpet and tickled him until he whimpered. Pausing the tickling to ask questions, the cross-examination went like this,

"What do you think you were doing"
"I was pranking on you."

tickle tickle tickle.

"Why were you pranking on me?"
"hee hee hee... cuz it seemed fun. I even put stuffed animals in the closet so it would look like I was hiding there. Did you look? hee hee hee"

tickle tickle tickle

"What does mommy have a black belt in?"
"Tickle-Fu"
"And what did you think would happen?"
"I forgot."

tickle tickle tickle

"Did we learn anything?"
"Don't rat myself out.."

tickle tickle tickle

"I MEAN DON'T PRANK ON MOMMY"

Quality Outside
I loaded him and the bikes up and we rode out along the Martinez shoreline path today. It's partially washed out. It was just Super N and I. He isn't a very experienced cyclist, but between the rough road, isolation from car traffic and it being just us, it was splendid and he had a good time. I rode behind him, watching him pedal for all he was worth and listening to him squawk and comment on the uphill climbs and downhill speed. I look forward to him getting stronger and being able to go out on longer rides.

Your family sounds so like ours was half a century ago!

When I read your post it reminds me of the good times we had. Thank you.

My folks didn't own bikes, so this kind of outing never happened when I was growing up. We did go picnicking and fishing as a family, though.
