Hey Porter, hey porter, can you tell me the time ....
(Gawd, I love Johnny Cash!)
This is a boring project management update. I'm transcribing notes that I jotted onto a scrap of paper. I need to compare my progress with my deadline.
Updated: 11/13/06
Post Mortem:
Schedule: I did not want to be up all night on 11/10, but that's what happened anyway. After some pondering (and after getting some sleep), I have some thoughts:
1. The handwork took a lot longer than I anticipated. So did the skirt. It's been a long time since I did a skirt, so I need to smack myself on that one.
2. I "lost" my BART handwork time when work got pushy about my commute times. I'd been planning on this time for handwork. Instead, the handwork pushed into my night time activities. Same for my lunch hour - taken by work. Next time, don't schedule around lunch and BART.
3. As soon as I had a dedicated space to sew, my production amped up.
4. Work - it sucked me dry. On weekends I was more sluggy than I thought I was. EG - after taking the moms out for the day a week ago, I was too tired to do anything afterwards. Slug-girl.
5. Fabric-foo. The lining got shipped to the wrong zip code and arrived at the last minute. The sleeve fabric was in D'Salai's hands when I wanted/needed it. This was actually key. I had a good window to make sleeves and it closed while D'Salai had the fabric. So next time - hold onto fabric until I"m done cutting it out. And for the lining, next time just go buy some because this was a hitch.
I would still do it again. What nice people to sew for and they let us have our "head" in what we wanted to make.
Final thought: Watching Firefly and The Last Samarai fueled my brain from midnight until I pulled out Saturday morning. Awesome sewing flicks! FF is a lot of fun, but also shows what loyalty and friendship can accomplish. And I hope I can always see the message in TLS.
Schedule:
Week of 10/30)

Time: 30 min each = 60 min total

Goal 3: Sew silk bands onto 2nd sleeve Est: 1.5 hr
Tuesday Actual:
1. Did not take BART - why did I think I could stay up until 3am and then spring out of bed at 5:30am? Which is what I need to do in order to get on BART in time to connect w/ my shuttle.
2. Worked my butt off at work (110% and all that), so went to lunch. Needed OUT of office.
3. Didn't start until 11:30 pm (again). Done with measuring and construction by 1am. Took until 3am to "turn" raw edges on one half of garment. And somewhere in there I fell asleep while pinning for about 30 min. - not on purpose. Just powered down in place.
Accomplished:
Goal 1: Measured, cut and constructed. Made sure there was enough fabric for man shirt. Did not gather neck. Did the rest. Actually finished/sealed half the seams, which was not on the list. This took at least as long as the measureing, cutting and pinning. I couldn't seem (seam?) to stop and go to bed. But it looks so freaking "clean" when the edges are turned. I love it. (total time: 3 hrs minus plus an inadvertant nap)
Goal 2: nope. Need measurements or pattern.
Goal 3: Nope.
*Wednesday
Projected:
1. BART in AM: silk on sleeves
2. Lunch: more sleeves (ugh -when will the sleeves be done?)

Goal 1: 1-1/2 hr

*Thursday (11/2)

Goal 4: hand finish trim on sleeves (probably not time, but ...)
Thursday Actual
Did not make it onto BART - got up at 6:30 am - too late. Hnad work is dangerously behind schedule.
Start: 10:30, finish: 2am
Goal 1. Done (45 min)
Goal 2: 1/2 way done. (30 min - but dozed off in middle of this)
Goal 3:
A. Done (1-1/2 hr - all that pinning means less seam ripping)
B, C, D: nope
Goal 4: Nope.
I got the eyelets on the front half done and was wondering why I was all "hip" to do. And then I fell asleep while running the gadget. So instead of screwing this up, I finsihed the 2 front sides and will do 2 backsides later. I need to punch through and might have to do some hand-binding.

Projected:
Reassessed based on progress.
Goal 1: Chemise.

Est: 1 hr (30 min per sleeve)
E. Pleat sleeves and whip to foundation
Est: 1 hr (30 min per sleeve)
Goal 2: Attach sleeves to bodice
Goal 3: Corset: needs eyelets and a bit of bias tape
Saturday actual:

*Sunday (11/5)
Projected:
Goal 1: Cartridge pleating (2hr)
Goal 2: attach skirt to dress (30 min)
Goal 3: hem skirt w/ blind basting stitch. (1 hr - big hem)

In other news, I bought some wool for a new project.
And I am once again trying to work up a web site. Not my area, but hey, learning is fun.
Friday, 11/10/06
Ended up all night on Friday.
The outer sleeves took about 5-6 hrs to do. It was tedious and a lot of hand work.
The hem was finished by machine. Kind of cheating, but oh well. I used the blind stitch, so not too bad.
I finished sewing beads on the red sleeves at the event.
There was a lot of handwork. And I had to "figure out" how I wanted to do the outer sleeves.
The chemise did not get finished, but hers was so much nicer than the linen one - it worked a ton better on the slashed/gaped sleeves, it was clearly more suited to this outfit.
Forthcoming: chemise and coat. Need to throw part of the garding into the serger. Want to add some "flare" to the lining of the skirt.
(Gawd, I love Johnny Cash!)
This is a boring project management update. I'm transcribing notes that I jotted onto a scrap of paper. I need to compare my progress with my deadline.
