How to get through the holidays without overindulging or caving in to old patterns?

Well, this is MY strategy.

I've been pondering this and the topic came up at today's weigh in. People eat for different reasons. One friend is spending her first holiday alone and may try to use food as comfort. Others, like me, eat out of habit.

Here were my ideas:

1. Today I will write a letter to myself that I will open the morning of X-mas eve and then read again on X-mas morning.

I will put in a picture of myself from when I was super-overweight from Christmas past - the pictures I swore I'd burn and got too lazy to burn and just accidentally found this week. (OMG - pre acne treatment, too. BARF!)

The letter will remind me of all the things I am grateful for. It will discuss some of the specific instances of food challenge that I have overcome. I will remind myself that I am strong and that I am making choices for myself. I will discuss why I care about my weight and overall health, because the reasons are just as important as the actions.

2. On the morning of X-mas eve I will go to the gym after I read my letter to clear my thoughts and prepare for the day.

3. Using my Thanksgiving stategy on X-mas eve, I will take one spoonful of anything I like and revel in it. I will not overindulge. I will use un-sauced protein and unsauced vegetables to deal with actual hunger. (Although I'm betting that won't be a problem based on the number of dishes that will be there).

4. I will send left-overs home with the perpetrators.

5. On the morning of X-mas I will ignore the destruction from the aftermath of the party and take a walk on the path. I'll invite any not-hungover guests to join me. Not sure when - might need to be after the kids open gifts and after breakfast.

6. I will cook a healthy breakfast on X-mas morning.

7. Today I am going to write out my specific long term and short term fitness goals and tape them to my mirror in the bathroom. I will see them first thing in the morning, when I get home from work (and change) and when I take my contacts out for bedtime. I am going to try and find some sort of inspirational quote, too. LOL - if nothing else comes to mind, I'll use "just do it" ala Nike.

These were the ideas I shared in Weight Watchers today. The group really liked the letter idea and the Christmas morning walk. The group leader keeps joking that she is eyeballing me to become a group leader. I wonder what that would be like?

Awesome strategy! I think I'll be borrowing some of it!
I was hoping to also take a walk on Christmas day. I know I will need it as I am going to indulge in a cinnimon roll for breakfast and then our Christmas dinner will be a challenge...I LOVE Potatoes and it's hard for me to eat just alittle. Also planned on some healthy meals when we'll be visiting my family :) And sweets havent' been as much of a temptation was they once were..And I just had another motivation added in, Sister in law is getting married in May, I'd like to be able to get a nice outfit and not feel all gross that day like I did at my other sister in laws wedding.
I think I'll write myself that letter and then pin it to my shirt. Thanks fo rthe great ideas, very inspiring and I figure you'd do really well as a group leader!
