The Thursday Night Home Production of "The Tortise and the Hare"
N has to do book reports for first grade. These are not in the form of essays, but in various activities. We have a list of acceptable formats for this, including make a poster advertising the book, select 6 words and illustrate them, etc. We are not supposed to repeat any of the activities until we've done 10 different kinds. At this point we've blown through all the "easy to do with no advance warning ones" and are now into the "mommy needs to plan the time and supplies" ones. Also, wherever N goes, E is sure to follow, so I end up doubling my efforts and supplies so that she can do it too.
Last night we had puppet shows. While munching dinner they decorated brown paper bags into looking like the tortise and the hare while I threw a blanket over the rail in front of the fire place and prepped it so that they could "hide" back stage behind the blankets while putting on the show. Then after dinner they took turns putting on "The Tortise and the Hare" for us.
It was a great deal of fun and the kids really enjoyed it. N had me dim the lights and do a "drum roll" for him as he announced from behind a blanket what the production was. It was priceless and I need to get the camcorder and record this. I had N turn in the bags as proof of homework.
I think this might become a weekly Thursday night activity.
