I still have the sleepies really bad.

Swim Goal 1. be able to swim length of triathalon +10% (to take into account zig-zagging) 2. develop the ability to breath on both sides incase the triathalon buoys are on my right. (I currently breath on my left)

Sleepies: fell asleep and missed workouts on:
Friday, Sunday, and Monday. Dang it! What's my damage? I'm such a slacker.

Here's my recent fitness recap:

Thursday: 40 min cardio. 60 min intense weight lifting

Friday: fell asleep in fitness clothes before 8pm. Woke up around 11pm and gave up hope for workout..

Saturday: Tried to swim laps at Cowell pool. I felt like I spent the time trying to NOT drown. Ugh. And I'm a pretty competent swimmer and have done distance swimming at various times in my life. Most recently for the year or so leading up to and during my pregnancy for E.

On Saturday I managed to discover:
1. I had the worst ever goggles. They kept popping off my face and the strap would not stay tight.
2. Dayam - that pool is deep and it's a little unnerving to be in the middle of it and see how far away the bottom is as goggles fill with water.
3. When the goggles fill with water, I'm wearing contacts, I have to close my eyes because contacts are getting wet, the pool is 12ft+ deep and i have nothing to grasp onto, I start to panic. Flash backs to being held under as a kid. Booooo! sssss! Booo! Squash panic, roll onto back like sea otter and try to deal with rotten goggles. At least I "owned" the panic and suppressed it.
4. The hunky, rugged, older dive instructor I was sharing a lane with took sympathy and made some goggle suggestions and let me inspect his. Yay for friendly strangers with helpful advice.

I probably swam a total of 5 or 6 laps (1 lap = 25 yds down and 25 yrds back = 50 yrds) with a lot of goofing w/ goggles and some breast-stroke. I tried breathing on my right and got a lot of water in my mouth. booo! ssss! booo! Apparently I was not Queen of the Lanes. Humph. My brilliance continues to elude me.

Sunday Bike ride w/ Sassycat08. Freaking gorgeous day. Overall, bike ride was good. Sassycat08 - you are excellent company. It was something like an hour long ride.

Lessons learned: They call them road bikes for a reason. 1. Don't take your road bike off road. While biking in gravel that is not super-hard packed, the rear tire wanted to catch up with the front tire. Not good. 2. Mud is bad. Clumps of mud around breaks and in gears is bad.

I also got my first wipe-out out of the way. Kind of "yay" and kind of "ow". At least there was no blood. I was just standing there, decided it was time to pedal again, and fell over. Reminds me of the time I was skiing w/ [livejournal.com profile] d_salie and while just standing on the slopes chatting, kind of spontaneously fell for no reason. I guess I have to get these out of my system before I can be brilliant.

I intended to hit the gym Sunday eve, got dressed for it, and fell asleep around 8pm.

Monday
Summary:
Morning: Swam for 30 min with little break. Good workout. Up to 150 yds continuous. Some breathing on right side without getting water in mouth. Great goggles. This will be my monday morning thing.
Lunch: Yoga for 60 min. moderate workout. I think I dozed off in class when we did some reflectine lay down thingie....
Evening: got dressed to go to gym, but fell asleep around 8pm. Barely roused when hubby got home at 10:30. Apparently I left the front door unlocked. (eek!)

The sleeping thing is really annoying me. I have better things to do with my time than wile it away sleeping. Grrr... Tonight I MUST go to gym. I have asked hubby to help cut my evening napping off by 9:30 so I can work out.

My Second Pool Adventure (the rambly version)
Armed with new goggles, I arrived at Cowell pool at 5:50 am on Monday while the fog still lay thick across the land and the skies were dark. Street ligths reflected off the fog, creating islands of light surrounded by foggy oceans of darkness. Emerging one by one from the mist, I was joined by 6 other aqua warriors before the doors opened. All of us stood in silence under the single over head light, contemplating our upcoming watery endurance trial. Greeted by the cheery coutenance of the warden of the pools, we filed in to make our mark and begin our personal trials to test our endurance and mental stamina.

Turns out that I didn't have the multi-pass... aka pool membership card, so I had to stop and pay. This put me on the pool deck last, not first, so the others were already doing laps by the time I got out there. The problem with that is the pool is an outdoor pool, it was also fogged over and I couldn't see more than half way down the lanes to determine if they were occupied or not. I had to channel some patience and stand around on the cold pool deck while waiting to see which lanes weren't occupied. On the "how cool is that!" end of things, watching swimmers emerge from the mists was surreal.

Later I discover the ladies changing room does not have lockers and there is no way of locking up your stuff. Just a logistical issue, but a cumbersome one as I dragged my duffel from the pool deck and into the shower room with me and then into the changing room, while trying to avoid dripping all over my stuff.

The actual workout The new goggles rock! Kudos to kindly (hunky) dive instructors.

I swam for 30 min with no more than 15 second breaks between efforts. I started with a few 25 yd laps and before I left, I was doing 150 yds wihtout stopping (3 laps). I started timing myself. I did several 2-lap bouts and averaged 2:45+2:50, so a bit over 5:30 for 100 yds. So now I've got a working bench mark to measure my progress.

My butt hurts - not sure how much of that is biking or swimming. My neck hurts - that would be the biking. Need to keep up routine real world running, biking and swimming because those are the hidden muscles that need strengthening and can be overlooked in the gym.

heh... hey here is a suggestion for building up breathing on both sides... try sustained swimming for 20 minute periods. By this I mean constantly swimming (continuous motion) in the pool for 20 min. I found out real quick I could switch sides and strokes to sustain it.

You may not be able to change strokes in triathlon... but it can build up your time tolerance until you need to practice one stroke only.

So, a question for ya. Do you eat before or after your workouts? If I actually do get up and go to the gym in the morning, I hate to do it on a completely empty stomach, but then again, I don't want to eat breakfast and then exercise. Same thing for dinner -- I get home around 6:00 - should I eat before exercise or wait until after? I don't like eating after 7:00 or so, esp. since I try to be in bed by 11 (I'm one of those weirdos that actually needs pretty close to 8-hours of sleep, sadly).

saw it. Not sure if that will work for me, but modifications are the spice of life, right? :->

eating and exercise

I don't do well on an empty engine, either.

If I am working out at night (8pm or later), I eat a piece of fruit or cup of carrots or cup of sliced bell pepper at 5pm as I'm walking to my car. This keeps me from being a starved maniac when I get home. Then I eat a moderate dinner by 6:30; usually 1/2 to 1 whole chicken breast and 1/2 cup of fat free cottage cheese or brown rice. For me, that's enough to fuel my work out without weighing me down. The protein is important for building muscle and the cottage cheese is my nod to dairy and more protein. (I only make the rice when I have already made it for kids or don't have cottage cheese).

This was my first morning work out and I did not eat first. My tummy grumbled at me, but settled down after a lap. If it was a gym work out (where it's more intense) I think I would have tanked out. Next time I'm going to try to eat 1/2 cup the oatmeal/yogurt I make up (which is part of my daily breakfast) and 1/2 banana before going into the pool. I'll do that first thing when I get up (5am) so I should be fine by the time I get in the pool (6am). I'll eat the rest of the oatmeal, banana, and the accompanying egg whites after I get out of the pool. Do you want me to let you know how it goes?

(breakfast = 1 cup of slow-cooked oatmeal, 1/4 cup fat free vanilla yogurt, 1/8 cut dried fruit, plus 3 hard boiled egg whites, plus piece of fruit)

Glad you got out on the bike Sunday -- I'll second that "freaking awesome day". (I only made it as far as gardening.) By the way, the sore butt? That would be the bicycling, definitely.

Another Breathing Tip

When I swim laps, I count in threes and breathe on three. That way I end up breating on both sides.

Speaking as an ex-competitive swimmer: when swimming freestyle, we were taught to count strokes in odd numbers, generally 3 or 5. This forces you to breathe on both sides. After a while you get used to it and don't need to count.

I'm going to have to retrain.. right now I count to 4 and breath without thinking... I wonder how much pool water I'll swallow before I figure this out? bleck.

But I'm going to try it Friday morning. We shall see how lovely it is to retrain and flail about in deep water. heh.
