triathalon:
Different levels - looking at "long course"; 1.5 mi swim; 18-ish mile bike; 13 mi run
Escape from Alcatraz - you have to qualify for it by doing one of the noted "Escape from" triathalons. Or get lucky by doing one of the qualifying tri-s and being randomly drawn. Fat chance. Move along, nothing to see here.
Wildflower (Monterey) looks close enough. What's with the recommended camping thing? Need to do more homework
Water temp: 55-65
Should do Tri-Camp in March of 2008. Register in December of 2007
Tri camp notes to bring a wet suit. This seems to be the deal for Nor-cal stuff. Eek - buy? rent? Very expensive. probably rent. Looked at event pics - all the swimmers had wet suits. gah! brrr! ick. oh well. Don't want to go too far from home, so wet-suit it is.
Will need a bike by March 2007 plus biking safety equip.
food for thought.
Swimming laps tomorrow night.
Did a mile on treadmill tonight. Woot woot... yeah, pales in comparison to the 13 mi of a tri, BUT I only quit cuz I was out of time, not because my internal whine-o-bot was making any noise. Current fitness plan goes through end of August, so no major tweaks between now and then. Just replace curent cardio w/ swimming 1x a week. Slowly increase running distance/time to eclipse elliptical work outs.
Need to find local 10K and 1/2 marathon for October and December/January.
OMG!!! I'm actually planning this. I am a freak. beddie by time before I start researching any other mad schemes.

Date: 2007-07-20 05:21 pm (UTC)Once upon a time in a life far far awayWhen I was a kid I swam in the ocean a lot -- was involved in Junior Lifeguards for several years & our regular swims were beyond the break line. I don't know where your triathalon targets are, but I can guarantee that you'll want at minimum a wetsuit top or a spring suit (a onesie that ends in shorts) if you're swimming in the Monterey Bay or points north... south of that I don't really have experience until we get to Huntington Beach area... that's almost like bathwater in comparison.FWIW, we considered the ocean warm in Santa Cruz when the water would hit 52°F. You can be as big of a stud as you want, but hypothermia is ugly and doesn't care how fit you are.
