Or just toil and trouble..

Stress Management = Play-doh at my desk
I need to exercise so that I can protect co-workers from my temper. Between the hectic home schedule and lack of my exercise outlet for 2 weeks, I was really snappy Thursday and Friday when dealing with terminal idiots. I even yelled at someone who was being anti-helpful and talking over me on the phone at work. (kind of like my phone call w/ 24hr fitness). I hate it when my temper starts to leak out. Friday morning I brought in cannisters of play-doh and keep them on my desk. I start to play w/ it when I start to get upset. It's actually helping; I stopped barking and being upset at the annoying co-worker even though I didn't stop disagreeing with her. Rah rah Play-doh.

Revived Opinion of 24 HR Fitness - the local manager rocks
Friday night I did my gym work-out. yay! And I met with Kenny K., manager of my local 24-hr fitness club and built like The Rock. It turns out the hubby wants to use the membership that I cancelled so I needed to go set it up again. sigh. That's just sooo ironic; he doesn't use it for 3 years and on the day I cancel it, he asks me to order a replacement membership card for him because NOW he wants to go.

Anyway, Kenny was professional and nice. I told him my drama, starting with the miscommunication between his staff person and myself, then the whole maddening phone thing. No, I did not vent because that whole thing is in the past: I was nice and professional. When we were done, he reinstated the account and he offered to comp me the months that were erroneously charged to the wrong account. Wow! And all I was hoping for was the same rate I'd gotten for the hubby the first time. Rah Rah for customer service at my club.

Triathalon prep
I'm hyped about the triathalon, which means nervous and excited and overwhelmed and determined to whip it. So Saturday morning I took my (newly borrowed) bike out and did a 1hr+20 min ride and then did a 40 min stagger/run. I am now confident that I could probably finish the triathalon right now. I need to work on improving my fitness level, I need to train on hills and I need to get the rust off my swim skills between now and then because I want to do more than "just finish"; I may register for an Olympic length in the fall.

I was very tired during the run. I think I need to take in some calories while I'm doing this, but not sure if it should be carbs or protein. Anyone reading this who might have feeback?

Oh - and Le Chef may start joining me for the bike portion of the program. Yay! I'm assuming that will be once we get past Thanksgiving and our start time will be 9am-ish. I mentioned it to Spot Boy, but his bike is at work. Maybe he'll find a loaner and we'll start a club and get jerseys and maybe I'll get them racing and .. Ooops! Stop that! You are too busy!

It's just like falling off a bike
Fifteen years ago I commuted on a bike to and from San Jose State to a variety of friend's sofas and none of them were less than an hour from campus. However, it appears that if you don't use it, you lose it as I nearly wiped out on our almost-level 20-ft long driveway on my way to the street. I hastily did a few practice laps in front of the house and the reality is there are a lot of biking skills and techniques you don't realize you develop until they are all gone and you're faced with relearning. The first ones I had to rediscover were how to get on, how to start, how to stop and, after stopping, how to plant your feet instead of your face. Then there were the gears to manipulate.

Good thing my enthusiasm and self-confidence outweigh my fear of looking silly. I took off without having re-mastered any of this because in my mind I had no choice; it was time to ride, I had an hour ride ahead of me and I'd have to figure it out anyway, so I might as well do it in front of all the real athletes on the trail instead of in front of my house where the neighborhood kids could watch and snicker.

I rode some combo of the the Contra Costa Canal trail (http://home.pacbell.net/leewaysf/cccanal.html) and the "Briones to Mt Diablo" trail. It took me 1hr+ 20 min, it was mostly level, paved and had very little in the way of hills. What it did have was a ton of intersections where I got to practice starting, stopping, and navigating between narrow pillar things that keep crazy drivers off the paved trail. The pillars threw me into a panic the first half dozen times, but by the time I was done with my ride, I'd gone from panic to being wary. yay! And the starting-stopping frequency helped me get over mashing myself on the bike seat as I learned to lift up onto the seat while in motion. yay! And I even fiddled with shifting gears as I approached the streets. yay!

Then I did my 40 min run. I read in Jane Booth's book about the calf-cramping in the first 5 minutes and a few LJ-ers who do tri's also said the same, so I was looking forward to experiencing that myself so that the tri wouldn't be a shock. It wasn't too bad. It felt very tight, but I didn't actually cramp.

What I noted during the run portion was that I felt tired the whole time. My body wasn't sore; it lacked energy. I think I was doing a 10-min mile, which is why I set it at 40 min run. And I kept vegging out, which is when I slow down, so there was a constant re-asserting my attention on the run to pick up my pace. I went off-road to a dirt trail at the mid point so I could run up a 50-degree incline and start working on my hill-skills. I think I picked up my pace over the last mile and then did some sort of quasi-sprint in.

This Saturday I'll have to use the gym so that I can be done in time to do all the stuff I volunteered for the Grpyphon party and games. But NEXT saturday, I'm on it again.

I do have my bike at work, and I ride at lunch if you're interested in riding out here. I do want to get a bike for riding around home, but I may just fix up the wife's bike since she has let hers die of loneliness.

I hope I'll be ready before then.

I was going to go to a scribe practice somewhere to get some lettering done, but I haven't made any concrete plans. What are you doing at Ysa's?

I was going for slow work, it turns out Nick has a school function tomorrow night for families and I signed us up. So I'm not going this week or ... since I now booked Wed nights w/ one of my aprenti in December. So I'm on hold for Ysa's until Jan.

It's all good. I'm mentally ready and 12th night is a great landmark/ starting point for starting new things and having my armor tweaked. Hm. I need to make a gambeseon.

Gels worked well for me during my training and my triathlon - one 15 minutes before starting and then one every 45 minutes to an hour during. I believe that carbs is what you want during the period of physical activity, protein is for recovery.
