I seem to have dropped the ball on N's math. (fuckity fuck fuck fuck!)

Reading is on target or at least on track.
Spelling rocks.
Writing it legible.
Math... errr, dang! (head-table! head-table!)

So last night over dinner at Mimi's we had math races. No, we were not chasing over-sized number characters through the restaurant, although I'm sure that would have been more fun. I have a copy of the sheet of math he gets tested on each Friday. He has to complete it in 2 minutes before moving onto the next, so we drilled with a watch. There were treats involved as bribes for putting on a happy face and for small improvements. Ugh - I hate food bribes, but I was at a loss and had 15 minutes to plan.

On the way home from Mimi's, we did animal math in the car out loud. 2 = bunny ears (like when you hold up 2 fingers). 5 = space monkeys (4 limbs + tail). So 7 minus bunny ears is space monkeys. Yeah, I've probably messed him up for today, but it made him laugh out loud and he got a kick out of it. On the plus side, he wanted to do one more "race" when we got home. He managed to complete 4 more equasions in the 2 minutes even though he was yawning his head off. I was so proud and made sure he knew it.

Argh! But my "parenting" meter got a kick in the gut over it. I hate playing catch up. There are so many things to track and I keep finding out I'd dropped the ball on something. I suck. But I try. Are there bonus points for trying?

yes. Do you know how many parents don't try?
I love the animal math.

You so TOTALLY get bonus points for trying!

I remember playing games with Rachel to improve her math skills...we started out with 2 dice and rolled them...she had to add them as fast as she could...if she got it right she got a penny. After a while we started timing it, and if she got it in 5 seconds she got a penny, if not, then no penny. The next step after that was to get it in 5 seconds or she gave ME a penny. It was quite a fun game and can be done for subtraction too (larger die roll minus smaller die roll). (this works when you get to the times tables too)

I still have trouble keeping up with everything I need to do as a parent. All I figure I can do is do my best and keep truckin on!

I think you are a kick a$$ mom! Kudos to you for all that you do for your kids...

HUGS.

SPACE MONKEYS!

He'll remember it. It's funny, not unapproachable. And his Mom does it.

You ROCK.

Hey, even medical students use funky mnemonics to keep things straight. You're not ruining him--you're preparing him early for a career as a neurosurgeon!

I was behind in math in elementary school and caught up and actually got ahead by junior high. Then I became a math major.
