My current question:

I see a ton of teens getting out of high school with no idea what to do with their lives. They hate school, so they don't go to college. Or they go to Junior College and putter around there for 10 years or so. To me, they appear directionless and with no drive to do anything with their lives.

I want my kids to pick a career path or vocation, regardless whether it involved college (although I prefer them to go to college). I want them to grow up, move out, and be big people in the big-people world. How do I get my kids to choose a life path that doens't involve laying on my sofa watching TV or plugging into computer games and guzzling Purple Flrup(1)?

All thoughts and feedback welcome. Feel free to ramble. You don't need to be a parent to have an opinion or insights.

Later I'll post what I've already started doing. I suspect the soft-fuzzy folks who prefer to solve family conflict with cookies and hugs will think of my house as being run by the Boot-Camp Mom from Hell.

I registered for a random drawing placement into the "Escape from Alcatraz" triathalon in June.

If you don't win a top 3 spot in one of the qualifying triathalons, your only other option to get into the Escape from Alcatraz is their lottery system.

1.5 mi swim, 18 mi bike, 8 mi run.

Why the hell not? I swim a continuous mile in the pool with plans to bring that up to 1.5 mi in the next few months. I currently bike 20 mi straight. I'll have to work up to 8 mi of running, but there's plenty of time. I couldn't think of a good reason to not do it, so I applied to the lottery drawing.

And I'm probably registering for the Olympic Tri in Pacific Grove in September. I have to hold off on any other fall tri's until a good friend figures out his wedding date.

Today has been long and hard, I won't get out of work before 7pm, but it's not a bad day, just a tiring day. And it's my DOR (day of rest, ie. no gym tonight). I plan on vegging out w/ Vic, Marsha, the hubby and whomever else on CoH for a little while and then heading out to the corbie cave to work on my white kirtle from 12th night. And resume watching B5. It all good.
